Sobe Meets Trenton
I adopted Sobe as a desperate 2 day old orphan. He was found in an unused boat with no mother to claim him. His umbilical cord was still attached and he weighed a whopping 3.3 ozs. His first few days were a cycle of bottle feeding, wiping his bottom, burping his belly, and sleeping on a heating pad (to aid digestion of the milk). Sobe’s eyes opened and he immediately claimed me as “Mom.”
For the first six months of his life, Sobe would snuggle next to me and suck his thumb. It melted my heart! He has since grown into a chubby 17 pound little man….the non-thumb sucking kind!
Sobe has a unique personality as all cats do. He has select members of his ‘core’ family. These are the people that are acceptable to appear in his presence. Some are given an occasional leg rub, while the special ones are allowed to give him forehead kisses. For the many that are not allowed in Sobe’s core family, they are greeted with a hiss or a growl, or even a swipe with claws bared. He then proceeds to chase the poor victim until they leave. Sobe has never been mistreated, so it is difficult to understand his rationale for the core.
Before their first meeting, I warned Trenton about Sobe.
Research has shown that a single hostile encounter could set the tone for their relationship for a long time to come. On his first visit, Trenton laid on the bed to watch football and Sobe joined him. Sobe stayed by Trenton’s side the whole time he visited. No hissing or growling, only purring…and any exposed claws were used to knead.
As proof positive, the picture of Sobe on Trenton’s chest is from their first meeting.
It turns out that Sobe loves Trenton too.
